What happens if we sit for a long time?

Many students are spending most of their day sitting on the desk. Me, as a student, I know how it feels to sit for a long time. I can feel my muscles all over the body become stiff and tight which isn't a pleasant feeling. Therefore, I did some further research about 3 things that happen when we sit down all day.

Our legs and glutes will become weak.
By sitting all day, we are not using our lower body muscles, which is the weakening of those muscles. Without a strong leg and glute muscles, our body can easily be injured.

Weight gain
Moving cause our muscles to release molecules like lipoprotein lipase, which helps process the fats and sugars we eat. However, when we spend most of our day sitting, the release of those molecules will decrease.

Tight hips and a bad back
Sitting causes our hip flexors to shorten, and our seated position can also hurt our back, especially if we have bad posture or do not use an ergonomic chair. Also,  poor posture while sitting can cause compression on the discs in our spine and can lead to premature degeneration, which results in chronic pain.

Stiff shoulders and neck
As with our legs, glutes, and lower back, our shoulders and neck will also suffer from prolonged sitting. This is especially true if we are hunched over looking at a computer screen.

Anxiety and depression
There are mental effects when we sit for a long time. The risk of both depression and anxiety are higher in people who sit the most. This could be because the mental health benefits of fitness are lacking when we spend our days sitting then rather than moving.

Varicose Veins
Sitting for long periods of time can cause blood to pool in the legs. This can lead to varicose veins or spider veins. These swollen and visible veins can be unsightly. They can even lead to more serious conditions, like blood clots.Related image
